The Region: Roero, Piemonte
Just across the Tanaro River from the more famous hills of Barolo and Barbaresco lies Roero, a quieter corner of Piemonte that UNESCO recognized as a World Heritage site in 2014. Its sandy, sediment-rich soils — a legacy of the ancient sea that once covered the area — give Roero's wines a lighter touch and a more perfumed, elegant style than their neighbors across the river. The region is best known for two wines: Roero Arneis, a fresh, mineral white made from a grape once nearly lost to history, and Roero, a red built from Nebbiolo, the same noble grape behind Barolo and Barbaresco, but here showing more finesse and approachability while still aging beautifully.
